What is a BOD Incubator and how does it work?
BOD incubator stands for biochemical oxygen demand incubator that is primarily helpful for determining levels of organic matter and nitrogen in wastewater samples. It is a unique type of incubator that is used to produce an insular environment with a consistent temperature of 20°C and many industries utilize this equipment to build such an environment. In microbiology laboratories, it is extensively used for cell culture and fungal growth, BOD test, fermentation, crop and physiology, and several pharmaceutical tests, etc.
A BOD incubator is also considered a refrigerated incubator or low-temperature incubator because it generates a temperature limit between 5°C to 60°C or comprising cooling and heating capabilities under one unit. They utilize oxygen as an electron acceptor. When microbes intake organic matter it delivers the energy to withstand and reproduce. Similarly, the oxidation technique is continuing without the help of microorganisms. The whole thing is estimated by the Chemical Oxygen Demand method (COD).
The BOD incubator works on the principle that power is provided by channels MCB, the temperature is stabilized within a digital PID temperature controller, normally at 20°C and the machine is retained functioning for five days. The cooling system begins only after stabilizing the temperature. An Axial fan allocates air inside the compartment. The temperature detector senses the established temperature and delivers data to the PID controller, which then holds the set heat constant till the aspired period.
Before operating a
BOD incubator, it must be connected with the power supply. Subsequently, turn on the main switch on the mainboard and after that turn on the switch on the cabinet. Later on, adjust the required temperature on the controller by pressing the set knob and soft key. Control the temperature every day by the following technique. Record the temperature which is shown on the controller. Regulate the temperature displayed on the digital screen. The temperature should not change by 2 degrees centigrade.
Many industries such as pharmaceuticals, agriculture, beverages and research laboratories use BOD incubators. In factories, it is utilized in waste processing plants to formulate the operation of the treatment system. BOD incubator is used in liquors to differentiate the nourishment in planned working conditions. It is utilized in the agriculture industry to formulate the germination of anaerobic bacteria.
While using the BOD incubator, few precautions are needed to be followed strictly. Always disconnect the BOD incubator from the socket when it is not in use. To avoid downtime and retain the working condition of the incubator, periodic servicing is essential. Before operating a
BOD incubator read the instruction handbook carefully and don’t overuse it. During cleaning the incubator, it must be disconnected from the power supply. Clean the BOD incubator regularly to retain its working performance. Survey the temperature transitions in the BOD incubator every month.
